Middlethorpe Hall

A Queen Anne style country house built exactly 300 years ago, surrounded by 20 acres of parkland and garden, yet only ten minutes from the historic city of York. Middlethorpe Hall was built in 1699 for Thomas Barlow, a wealthy Sheffield ironmaster and was later the home of the famous diarist and gossip, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.

Middlethorpe Hall was rescued from decay by Historic House Hotels whose sympathetic restoration transformed this neglected mansion into a charming country house hotel with beautifully furnished reception rooms designed to reflect the elegance of the 18th century.

The panelled dining rooms overlook the gardens and the imaginative food awarded three Rosettes by the Automobile Association follows the hotel's theme of traditional excellence. There is a well chosen wine list reflecting quality and variety. As well as our two restaurants we have rooms for private entertaining. The Grill Room will accommodate up to 50 people and has its own sitting room for pre-dinner drinks and the Yellow Room which overlooks the garden will seat up to 14. The Barlow Room close to the hotel is suitable for parties of up to 40 people.

Thirty individually designed and superbly equipped bedrooms and suites, ten in the house, seventeen in the adjacent 18th century courtyard, a garden suite and two suites in an adjacent cottage.

The Barlow Room

This self-contained purpose built meeting room is fifty yards from the main house and is ideal for small conferences, receptions and private dining. A dividing wall gives flexibility to the room which can take up to 45 people in comfort. For small meetings there is also the Boardroom in the main house which seats 10 and has its own adjoining sitting room.

The Middlethorpe Spa, which opened in 1999 has been built behind the facade of a pair of Edwardian cottages in the lane opposite the hotel. Centrepiece of the Spa is the inviting 40' swimming pool. There is a whirlpool spa bath, steam room, sauna and sunbed and comfortable reclining chairs for guests to relax at the edge of the pool.

Three beauty salons are available for a variety of treatments using Clarins and other products and there is a small Club room serving drinks and light refreshments. A small exercise area is located in a restored Victorian Summer House. The Spa is open to resident guests and Club members and beauty treatments are available for non-residents.
