South Lodge
A magnificent Victorian country house built in 1883, South Lodge has been acclaimed since its opening as a hotel some 100 years later. Standing in 90 acres of mature gardens and grounds it enjoys splendid views over the South Downs and is ideally located for visiting many National Trust Properties. There is a range of bedrooms that are individually furnished and well-equipped, with many thoughtful personal touches provided.
The restaurant named after the centuries-old camellia that has been preserved as a centrepiece of the south facing terrace, takes pride in its regular use of herbs, soft fruit and vegetables from the property's own walled garden, as good an indicator as any of the care taken over food preparation. Gratifying results on the plate are well illustrated by the speciality Camellia menu that offers choices of Caesar salad with crispy ham or curried parsnip soup followed by confit duck with orange and vanilla sauce or baked Atlantic cod with prawn, caper and pepper dressing and rounding off with bitter chocolate tart or raspberry roulade.
A la carte alternatives that merit praise have included perfectly timed scallops with seafood rice and sweet-and-sour dressing, roe deer with foie gras, black trompettes and Madeira sauce and Belgian dark chocolate and orange parfait dressed with boozy black cherries marinated in kirsch.
