Gidleigh Park Hotel
Gidleigh Park is located in the SouthWest corner of England in Devon, and is situated within Dartmoor, a National Park boasting the largest and wildest area of open country in the south of England. The property is also just a few short miles away from the charming, ancient village of Chagford.
Gidleigh Park is amongst the most highly rated small luxury hotels in England, and certainly the most highly rated in the South West. The hotel has won many awards, e.g. Conde Nast Traveller Best Small European Hotel 1999, Caterer and Hotelkeeper Magazine Independent Hotel of the Year 1997, and Egon Ronay Guide Hotel of the Year 1990.
The house is set in 45 acres of magnificent and secluded gardens and woodland on the North Teign River, within Dartmoor National Park. Public rooms and bedrooms are individually furnished with antiques and fine English fabrics. There is a log fire burning every day of the year, and cut flowers brighten every room.
There are twelve bedrooms in the main wing of the house, and two in the north wing which was converted from a chapel. There are also two bedrooms in a charming thatched cottage 350 yards from the hotel. All of the bedrooms have the amenities expected in a luxury hotel, e.g. private bathrooms, television, direct dial telephones, radios and Frette bathrobes etc.
The restaurant at Gidleigh Park is rated one of the best in England. It has two Michelin stars, 5 out of 5 rosettes in the AA guide, and 8 out of 10 points in the Good Food Guide. Chef Michael Caines trained with Raymond Blanc, Bernard Loiseau, and Joel Robuchon before becoming head chef in 1994 and he is now known as one of the most innovative British chefs of his generation.
Menus change with the seasons, and the wine list is considered one of the five best restaurant wine selections in Britain.
A wide variety of recreational activities are available to Gidleigh Park guests, many stemming from a proximity within Dartmoor, and still others the product of nearby destinations. Within the Gidleigh Park grounds themselves, guests may enjoy a wide variety of activities including:
