Did You Know?
Chesterfield is famous for its 228 foot crooked spire that dominates the skyline. There are many colourful stories as to why the spire became crooked, but the truth is that while the spire was being built in 1349 the Black Death plague broke out. Because of a shortage in skilled labour many unskilled workers were employed and they did not build in enough cross bracing, and combined with the weight of the lead and weather conditions it caused the spire to twist.
