Egerton Grey

Egerton Grey is a distinguished country house situated ten miles from Cardiff and three miles from Barry. Formerly a nineteenth century rectory and private residence, the house was opened as a small luxurious hotel in the Spring of 1988.

It comprises ten exceedingly comfortable bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, two Dining Rooms, a restful Library and a magnificent Edwardian Drawing Room, all set in seven acres of lush gardens with views down to Porthkerry Park and the sea.

A feature of the hotel is its peaceful location set in a wooded valley away from all main roads. No other habitation or road can be seen from the hotel and our residents are able to relax completely in these peaceful and secluded surroundings.

Within the grounds are a croquet lawn and an all weather tennis court. A short stroll away towards the sea lies a delightful country park, immaculately tended by the local authority, where one may enjoy a pleasant round of 'pitch and put' over 18 holes. Further afield, but within a few miles, are well known golf courses, riding centres and many other attractions. There are delightful coastal walks with views across the channel to Devon and Somerset.

The Main Dining Room used to be the old Billiard Room and with its original Cuban mahogany panelling now lends itself superbly to quiet dinners by candlelight!

The Private Dining Room is oak panelled and has pretty views over the gardens to the sea. Either make a lovely setting for carefully prepared fresh cuisine that has already received many accolades in the guides. A two or three day break at Egerton Grey to include breakfast and dinner is a rare treat.

Amongst the many attractions in the area are the Welsh Folk Museum at St Fagans, which offers a number of fascinating restored period buildings carefully re-constructed from a by-gone age, the magnificent formal gardens at Dyffryn House an the fairy tale castle at Castle Coch. Within a short drive is Caerphilly Castle and the magnificent Cardiff Castle with its great Norman battlements and keep. Cardiff itself is now a superbly laid-out modern and prosperous city with fine shopping centre, theatres and concert halls.
