The Courtfield Hotel, Cardiff

Cardiff Overview

Cardiff, or "Caerdyff" as it is known in Welsh, is perhaps the best known of Wales' cities and it is certainly the most visited. However, many people may be surprised to know that Cardiff only became the Capital of Wales as recently as 1955. Nevertheless, since that time the city has done more than enough to live up to the title. Having undergone extensive redevelopment, it is now home to a world class opera house, some superb museums, excellent sporting venues and a vibrant nightlife. Now one of the UK's most fashionable cities, Cardiff is definitely on the up, with plenty for visitors to see and do.

Cardiff’s city centre mixes its 2,000 years of history with the best shopping in Wales and the city has over 200 restaurants with a wide range of world cuisine. There is plenty for visitors to see and do including Cardiff Castle, St Davids Hall and the National Museum and Gallery. Just outside Cardiff city centre is the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagan’s where more than 30 original Welsh buildings have been rebuilt amongst 100 acres of countryside. Cardiff Castle dates from Roman times and was made into a "medieval castle" in the 19th century by Lord Bute. Castell Coch a 19th century folly is also nearby. The Centre for Visual Arts, the UK’s only interactive gallery partners Techinquest, the hands-on science museum in Cardiff Gate with its immense barrage creating a 500-acre freshwater gate from the rivers Taff and Ely. Mermaid Quay has plazas, cafés, restaurants and shops.
