However, many people may be surprised to know that Cardiff only became the Capital of Wales as recently as 1955. Cardiff Castle dates from Roman times and was made into a "medieval castle" in the 19th century by Lord Bute. Castell Coch a 19th century folly is also nearby. The Centre for Visual Arts, the UK’s only interactive gallery partners Techinquest, the hands-on science museum in Cardiff Bay with its immense barrage creating a 500-acre freshwater bay from the rivers Taff and Ely. Mermaid Quay has plazas, cafés, restaurants and shops.
