Hartwell House has a remarkable history stretching back almost a thousand years. It was mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book as the property of William Peverel, a natural son of William the Conqueror.

The present house, which is Grade 1 listed, dates from the early 17th century and has both Jacobean and Georgian facades. It was built for the Hampden and Lee families (ancestors of General Robert E. Lee). The creation of Hartwell House and its grounds have involved many distinguished architects including James Gibbs, Henry Keene, James Wyatt, and the park was landscaped by Richard Woods, a well-known follower of Capability Brown.

Hartwell House is a magnificent stately home standing in 90 acres of landscaped parkland. It has 46 bedrooms and suites and several elegant and spacious reception rooms with outstanding decorative ceilings and panelling, antique furniture and fine paintings. It is set in rural countryside yet is only one hour from central London or Heathrow Airport and is an ideal place for a few days relaxation.

There are 30 bedrooms and suites on 3 floors in the main house and 16 in Hartwell Court, the adjacent 18th century stable block. Bedrooms are superbly appointed and many have four poster beds, and there are also facilities for disabled guests.

The principal Dining Room, designed in 1988 in the style of the eminent early l9th century architect, Sir John Soane, is the setting for the imaginative cooking, which has been awarded three rosettes by the Automobile Association. The Hotels extensive and carefully chosen wine list is also on offer to accompany your meal.

An essential part of a visit to Hartwell House is the opportunity to relax and enjoy the pleasures of the Spa. Swim in the warm clear water of the inviting pool lined with blue mosaic tiles, relax in the steam room, saunas and the bubbling waters of the whirlpool bath. For the energetic there is a well equipped gym featuring the latest technological exercise machines, and there are two all weather tennis courts in the grounds and guests can play croquet and fish in the lake. For those that would prefer to be pampered, experienced therapists offer a wide range of beauty treatments using Clarins, E'SPA, Jessica and St Tropez products.
