Thornbury Castle Hotel, Bristol

The building of Thornbury Castle, started in 1511 by Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, ended in 1521 when he was beheaded by Henry VIII. Buckingham's vast estates, including Thornbury, were confiscated by the King who stayed here with Anne Boleyn in 1535. Henry's daughter, Mary Tudor, lived here as a Princess and when she became Queen she returned the Castle to the descendants of the late Duke.

Today, this Tudor Castle stands serenely in 15 acres, with distant views of the Severn Estuary and the hills of South Gloucestershire and Wales. Fine old panelling, tapestries and paintings enrich the interiors. There are 24 carefully restored bedchambers, most overlooking the oldest Tudor garden in England or the vineyard. Many have sumptuous four-poster beds and huge Tudor fireplaces.

Thornbury Castle is an ideal base from which to discover the many historic sites, villages and towns located within an hour's drive of the castle, or cross the Severn Bridge into Wales and explore that beautiful country.

The main apartments have been carefully restored to provide 24 bedchambers, and within the grounds there is also a two bedroom family Gatehouse with its own lounge, kitchen and garden. Each bedchamber, individually decorated with private bathroom, central heating, colour television and direct-dial telephone, still retains original features of the Castle. Several have large Tudor fireplaces and some have very fine oriel windows overlooking the walled gardens.

Built in 1511, Thornbury Castle is the only Tudor castle to operate as a hotel and restaurant in the country. With its combination of rich history, charming surroundings, enchanting interiors, fine food and friendly and attentive service it is a perfect place for corporate entertaining.

Thornbury Castle has 3 dining rooms, each one with its own unique charm and ambiance. The Tower, The Oriel, and The Baron's Sitting Room seat a maximum of 30, 20 and 22 respectively. They are all baronial in style with panelled walls, heraldic shields and open fires.
