The Edgar Hotel, Bath


The Edgar Hotel is one of the original Georgian Town Houses in Great Pulteney Street and dates from the 1788-1789 period. The hotel is named after King Edgar who was crowned the first king of England in AD973 in a Saxon Monastery which was destroyed and in its place now stands the Fifteenth Century Abbey which is a short walk from the hotel.

When UNESCO designated Bath a World Heritage Site in 1987, it put Bath on par architecturally with the beauties of Florence and Rome. Pulteney Bridge built by Robert Adam, is lined with small shops and is a delightful 18th Century entrée to great Pulteney Street where the Edgar Hotel is situated. This avenue is one of Europe's most magnificent, built by the Georgian Architect Thomas Baldwin in the classical dimensions of 1000ft. long by 100ft. wide.

The Edgar Hotel is privately owned. This Georgian Town House which is a Grade 1 Listed building has been converted into an 18-bedroom comfortable bed and breakfast hotel. The rooms are centrally heated and are a mixture of double - twin - single and family rooms all having their own private shower and WC., colour TV, tea and coffee making facilities.

The proprietors aim is to offer good clean accommodation at an affordable price in the centre of bath. On the ground floor there is a pleasant lounge which has a fine view of Prior Park and the surrounding fields. The breakfast is served in the room which overlooks the famous Gt. Pulteney Street. The centre of Bath is just at the end of the street. The Roman Baths being only 500 yds, in fact most of the main tourist attractions are within easy walking distance including the shops and excellent restaurants where one must sample local foods such as Bath Buns, Sally Lunn Cakes, Bath Chaps and most famous of all Bath Olivers.

The mainline station and bus stations are close by, and Bath is within easy access to the M4 for road links to London, Wales, the midlands and the South West.
