Today Basingstoke is part of The Borough of Basingstoke and Deane, an area covering 250 sq miles. Whilst Basingstoke is a major commercial area, it is surrounded by beautiful countryside and Deane, the smallest parish in the Borough, is just a few miles to the west. The Borough also includes the smaller towns of Whitchurch to the west, Tadley to the north and Kingsclere to the north west. Close to Kingsclere is Watership Down made famous by Richard Adams’ book.

Did You Know?
Basingstoke town centre is currently undergoing major redevelopment, replacing the 1960’s, predominantly concrete shopping centre with a brighter shopping and leisure complex more suitable to a thriving town in the 21st century. The development, Festival Place, is being done by Grosvenor Estates and will take about 3 years to complete. The station area has completed its facelift and is now a stylish ‘gateway’ to the town. The redevelopment will compliment other buildings such as The Anvil, the town's international concert hall.
Basingstoke is twinned with three European towns; Alençon in France, Braine L’Alleud in Belgium and Euskirchen in Germany, with the aim of furthering business, education, social and sporting links.
