Aylesbury has been the county town of Buckinghamshire since the reign of Henry VIII and dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. Situated at the foot of the Chiltern Hills and at the heart of the Vale of Aylesbury. Aylesbury has been a market town since the 13th century and the market is held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There is a market for antiques and bric-a-brac on Tuesdays. A famous market was the fat stock market renowned for Aylesbury Duck. The town also boasts of two modern indoor shopping centres - Friars Square and Hale Leys.

Modern Aylesbury is now a centre of light industry including printing, food processing and light engineering. At the centre of the town is the cobbled Market Square, home to the 18th century County Hall and Courthouse where Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have been defendants. The most famous trial to date in Aylesbury ended with the conviction of the Great Train Robbers and was held not in the Courthouse, but in the Council Chamber in Walton Street. St Mary's church is the focal point for the oldest part of Aylesbury, home to the 15th century Kings Head and the 18th century Prebendal House, that belonged to radical MP John Wilkes. The 15th century grammar school is now part of the County Museum.
