Andover is a town in Hampshire in the countryside of southern England. It dates to before the Conquest and probably got its name from a hunting lodge built by one of the kings of Wessex. Hampshire, also known as Hants, is a maritime county of southern England, divided into the mainland area of Southampton and the Isle of Wight. The county is bounded on the north by Berkshire, on the east by Surrey and Sussex, on the south by the English Channel, and on the west by Dorsetshire and Wiltshire. It covers an area of 1649 square miles.

Despite the very modern industrial parks on the outskirts of Andover, the town has managed to retain the charm and character of its market town centre. Andover enjoys excellent transport links and is on the main London Waterloo to Exeter railway line. The town is just off the A303 road to the south west and is linked to Winchester and Oxford via the A34.

There has been a settlement at Andover since Saxon times and in the surrounding countryside there are many examples of prehistoric, Bronze and Iron Age settlements. The Harroway, an important prehistoric trading route crossed the north part of Andover and was used for centuries by traders, pilgrims and other travellers. To the north east of Andover 2 important Roman roads crossed each other - the Portway from London to the West Country and the Icknield Way from Gloucester to Wales.

The River Anton that meanders attractively through the town was used to provide power for the towns industries. The Domesday Book of 1086 mentions Andover as having 6 mills, only one, Town Mill survives today and is now used as a pub and the millers house is the Tourist Information Centre. The pub grounds have some interesting wooden sculptures that reflect the importance of the river to the town.

Andover grew again in the 1950's when like Basingstoke it became an overspill town for London and further expansion of both housing and industry is planned.
