Alton Overview Alton is a charming and picturesque Georgian market town and there have been settlements close by since prehistoric times when Palaeolithic and Neolithic man roamed the area. Alton is in East Hampshire, an area that is bordered by Surrey and West Sussex and is 9 miles south of Farnham, 18 miles north east of Winchester and miles of Basingstoke. Alton is derived from the Saxon name 'Awel' or 'Aewieluntun' meaning 'Village of the Great Spring' referring to the valley of River Wey on which Alton is situated. The town has a wide variety of shops, both large and small and Tuesday is market day, comfortable hotels, restaurants catering from fast food to Thai to traditional English and several museums and other visitor attractions including the Watercress Line.
